There is a silent crisis in the United States as nearly 1-in-3 families struggle to afford diapers and related supplies for their children.  Families in our local community are likewise affected by this crisis.  Many of these families search for community resources to assist them; however, it is frequently the case that no community organizations are positioned to do so.   Children suffer when their diapers are not changed as needed and their bodies are not kept clean, placing them at risk of developing diaper rash, which at times can become severe.  It is also a fact that when there is stress in the home, children suffer.  Parents become stressed when they cannot find a community resource to assist them in their time of need.

The First Baptist Church on Main Street in Owego, NY, saw a need as low income families were finding it difficult to find a resource for diapers. Dry diapers are essential for happy and healthy babies. Thus began the KIND (Kids in Need of Diapers) Project.

n April 2016, we began to provide diapers, wipes and creams for these families.

· 1 in 2 families struggle to afford diapers for their children to keep them clean and healthy.

· The poorest 20% of American families spend 14% of their post-tax income on diapers.

Many of these families live in our community.

· Government programs do not recognize diapers as a basic need. SNAP benefits and

WIC cannot provide these items.

The KIND Project provides diapers, wipes and creams the last Saturday of each month, 9 am – 11 am, from newborn to size 7, including pull-ups in sizes 2t-3t and 4t-5t.

From its beginning in April 2016 and through December 2024, KIND has provided 210,484

diapers, 5,345 wipes, and 4,221 creams such as AD and Desitin. We have also given out

3,984 bottles of shampoo. In December 2024 alone, we gave out 5,375 diapers.

The KIND Project couldn’t do this without grants and donations.

Diaper needs impact the well being of a family. We know babies are a lot of work, and giving

families a small thing such as a package of diapers, shows we care about them and their

children.
